Science Department

Acting Head of Department: Toby Chaplin

Deputy Head of Department: Alison Alvarez

The Science Department is a committed and hard working department. We have 9 full time teachers and 2 full time technicians. Science is taught in 8 modern, well equipped labs in the Portman building.

A tricky experiment

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3 we teach mixed ability classes. We follow a modular approach based around the QCA Schemes of Work with departmentally produced resources and follow the CASE programme and are currently adopting the TEEP teaching model. We place great importance on practical investigations and thinking skills. We are currently developing our use of ICT to support learning.

Last year 63% of our pupils achieved level 5 and above and 20 of those pupils achieved level 7.

Key Stage 4

Dissecting a heart

Over recent years pupils have consistently been successful in Key Stage 4. All pupils are entered for the NEAB/AQA GCSE Double Award (Modular) Science. Last year 48% of pupils achieved A*-C grades and the overall pass level was 97%. This is an improvement for the second consecutive year.

The Department works closely as a team, sharing good practice and supporting each other. Creative and innovative ideas and approaches are always welcome.

Teaching Science at Morpeth is a challenging and rewarding experience.
