Morpeth School

Citizenship & PSHE

Head of Department: Jill Moore

Citizenship and PSHE are taught through a carefully planned tutorial programme throughout the school. In addition to this pupils are involved in developing further skills and awareness through project work and debates in other areas of the curriculum including out of school activities and residential trips.

The curriculum is enhanced and brought to life with the careful planning of outside agency support and input, the use of our city\'s rich resources for educational visits.

Special projects

Since the introduction of Citizenship in September 2002, we have worked on many exciting projects with the support of Voluntary and statutory organisations. One of these was with the National Theatre, where over 700 pupils were involved in watching performances and working in thought provoking workshops both before and after the performances.

Pupils are developing skills in debating by attending workshops, demonstrations and competitions at other local schools, at the English Speaking Union and the Houses of Parliament.

Each year our Year 9 pupils are visited by our local Magistrates (from Thames Magistrate Court) in order to find out more about the law and the justice system.

Once again this year we held a voting day for the U.K. Youth Parliament, and again a pupil from Morpeth was elected.

Citizenship and PSHE helps give the pupils the knowledge, understanding, and skill to prepare them for making informed choices in their lives.
